Uganda School for the Deaf was the first school for the Deaf in Uganda. It was established in 1959 by the Uganda Society for the Deaf at Namirembe Hill on a leased land from the church of Uganda.

It is a government aided Primary School bringing together all categories of Deaf children, including Deaf children with multiple disabilities.

The school moved to its new site at Ntinda, plot 18 Ntinda road 5 kilometers from Kampala city in 1989.

Vision: To mold self reliant Deaf / Deaf blind learners regardless of their disabilities.

Education:

Uganda School for the Deaf offers primary education with pre-vocation skills in Carpentry, Tailoring, Home Sciences, and Agricultural Practice. The school also plans to introduce Computer Training – ICT and is doing their best to cover the national curriculum using total communication with the bias of sign language.

Admission:

Uganda School for the Deaf admits children from 5 years to 17 years who are first assessed by ENT doctors in the government referral hospital. They are first enrolled in pre-school program, which run every Wednesday during the school days mainly to introduce them to basic sign language. Others are admitted from small units without higher classes and have to come with Head teacher’s consent. Late starters, over the age of 12 or those who have become deafened, are admitted into special classes organized to meet their needs.

Facilities:

Uganda School for the Deaf facilities includes 4 dormitories, 15 class rooms, a kitchen, and a dining hall. In addition, there is a carpentry workshop, a home science room, a library, and an Audiology room where Audio-grams are taken.

There are enough sanitation facilities at the school. The health facilities are within easy reach of the school since the school is located just 100 metres away from Ntinda trading centre.

Co-Curricular:

These activities cover social issues and study life of the Deaf pupils, their education, culture and leisure. At Ugandan School for the Deaf, the children are divided into lower nursery, upper nursery, and primary one to seven, classes. The children also learn Mat Making, Weaving, Cookery, Knitting, Hand Sewing, Machine Sewing, Crocheting and Carpentry.
