Kamwokya Primary School began operating in 1998 under joint efforts by the Kampala City Council, Kampala Central Division, the Ministry of Education, and Lion’s Aid Norway. Its purpose is to address the educational needs of the most underprivileged children in the Kamwokya and neighboring areas – Kamwokya is widely regarded as one of the worst slums in Kampala. Many of these children are orphaned due to AIDS, wars and domestic violence.

Kamwokya Primary SchoolCurrent enrollment is 1,271 students, with a teaching staff of 22. 2006 government grants were 3.7 million shillings ($2,114). While the school charges fees, they are largely uncollected given the extreme poverty of the serviced areas. The school’s most pressing challenges include furnishings, staff accommodations, textbooks, office equipment, fencing and a computer. Despite the direst of conditions, Headmistress Jane B. Kansiime is steadfast in her [related_posts]committment and resolve.
