Apuuton Primary School was set up by the Mill Hill Missionaries in 1939 and has been called Apuuton since 1962. Apuuton means sandy soil in the local language, Ateso. It has 1,555 pupils, 13 classrooms and 26 teachers. 4 of the classrooms have been built recently.
When first visited by Opportunity Education, the school had no power and security for equipment was lacking. In only a few months, however, a generator and secure cabinet were purchased by the parents and a secure room was provided by the Katakwi District Council.
Apuuton Primary School has recently started a boarding section for P3 – P7 and has 50 at the moment although facilities for the boarders are very poor and they sleep on mattresses on the floor. They pay 70,000 shillings ($38) per term plus 5,000 shillings ($2.70) for water. The UPE grant was 4.6 million shillings ($2,500) in 2005. In addition, day pupils are asked to pay 4,000 shillings ($2.20) to a development fund.
