St. Maria Gorreti Senior Secondary School, founded in 1966 by Rev. Fr. Ndiwalana a Catholic Priest then serving at Katende Catholic Parish, with the objective of bringing education nearer to the children within the area.
St. Maria Gorreti Senior Secondary School became a government – aided in 1984. However, the Government has not participated much in the development of the school apart from occasional grants given from time to time.
This explains why the school is predominantly boarding but still maintains a day-school section. The initial funding of the school came from contributions from the Catholic Church.
The school was occupied by soldiers and looted in the 1979 war. In 1982, Fr. Joseph Kijjambu made attempts to re-stock it but unfortunately from January 1985 to January 1986, soldiers again occupied it and once again the school was looted of its painfully acquired assets.
