Makerere Day and Evening School for Adults (MAECA) caters for those who never completed schooling at any level up to A ‘level. This is the first school of its kind in the country.

MAECA started in 1996 hoping to educate adults who had dropped out of school. It started with three adults in primary education. It added the A’ level section in 2000.

It was later discovered that there were actually far more adults who wanted O’level certificates. In 2002, the school started an O’level class, with one student. Between 1998 and 2000, the school had no centre number, using the Luwero hall as a UNEB examination centre.  As the numbers kept rising, the school acquired its own centre number in 2003.

It caters for those who never completed schooling at any level up to A ‘level.

Academics.

Shifts: Pupils and students study under three shifts; morning, afternoon and evening. The shift depends on which class a student dropped out of school. For example, for one who dropped out in P.3-P.6 and P.7-S.2, he would study in the afternoon. Those who dropped out in S.3 to S.6 are free to choose whether to study in the morning or evening, depending on their work schedule. Majority of the students are 30 and above and are engaged in casual jobs like boda-boda riding and housemaids. The next largest category includes secretaries, police and army personnel.

At Makerere Day and Evening School for Adults, students are always in school even when it is holiday time for other schools. Payment of fees is flexible. Students pay their tuition on a monthly basis, although those who want to pay per three months are allowed. The school also engages in extracurricular activities, always organizing outings for students to allow interaction between the evening and day students.

There is no need for a school uniform because we are dealing with adults.
However, decent dressing is encouraged .The fees structure is friendly to different levels of people. The school is organized in a family set up and each student is taken as a family member and can be helped by fellow students in time of need.

Campuses

Today, the school has three campuses; the O’level campus is on Sir Apollo Kaggwa road and the A’ level campus is at Makerere Redeemed Church. Another branch has just been opened in Hoima with over 30 students.
