The area surrounding the new Busumbu PEAS High School is exceptionally mountainous and beautiful, located in the heart of the Rwenzori mountain range.
Like most areas in this district the local population depend heavily on coffee for their livelihoods with many local farmers working to cultivate and process the beans. Thanks to the fertile land, other crops such as cassava, beans and bananas are grown. Bwesumbu sub-county has one of the highest birth rates of anywhere in East Africa with an average of seven children for every adult female. As a result the area has a very young population with high levels of deprivation.
There are currently no other secondary schools in the sub-county which means that students had to travel for long distances if they are to attend secondary school.
In such mountainous terrain travel can be difficult and expensive and so many young people miss out on education as a result.
[related_posts]There are currently very high levels of students dropping out of primary school and it is hoped that the addition of the new Bwesumbu PEAS High School will encourage more students to complete their primary education with the ambition of continuing onto secondary school.
School Director K Morris Hulhukya and Headteacher Benon Bwambale lead 11 teaching staff and seven non-teaching staff, proviing 10 ‘O’ level subjects. The schools also has an arable income generating project growing maize.
